Mrs. Marie Claire Makuza, American
Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Coordinator
Marie-Claire Makuza is Medland Hospital’s Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Coordinator. Her mission as UHC Coordinator is twofold: to raise awareness in the local community so that healthcare is widely available to people of all socioeconomic statuses, and to inspire other public and private hospitals to do the same. Marie Claire has been named African Global Health (AGH) Ambassador in Zambia as well the national and international spokesperson for Medland Hospital.
Marie-Claire Makuza previously oversaw more than a hundred medical professionals as head of the Nursing Department at Medland Hospital. She ably presided over this division of the Hospital both in its infancy and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Before moving to Zambia, Marie-Claire spent over ten years working as a Senior Nurse at a hospital in Phoenix, Arizona, USA. In 2008, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona and in 1992, she received her Canadian BA from the University of Ottawa
Marie-Claire, originally from Rwanda, spent six years in Canada before moving to the United States.
Mrs. Marina Smit
Nursing Director
Mrs. Marina Smith is Medland’s very energetic Nursing Director, a post that she has held for three years. She has been with Medland since before the hospital opened its doors and prior to her current role, was Head of Maternity.
Mrs. Smith has more than 40 years of nursing and midwifery experience, gained in public and private sector institutions in South Africa, Ghana and Zambia. In the Netherlands, she was a partner in a private midwifery practice for more than 10 years, and helped set up a multidisciplinary medical facility.
She is passionate about ensuring quality of nursing care, which she ensures by guiding and coaching the nursing team, always encouraging them to improve and excel.
Geoffrey Joseph Daka
Chief Sustainability Officer
Geoffrey Joseph Daka is a trained Environmental Practitioner in Environmental Management, Health and Safety from The University of Zambia. He has been a practicing Environmental Specialist since 2016.
The focus of his practice has been training on Best Waste Management Practices, Fire Safety Management, Infection Prevention and Control and Climate Resilience.
Mr. Daka is privileged to have been part of the first team from Zambia and only private health facility representation to be at COP28 in UAE which was the first Conference of Parties to dedicated a day on Climate and Health.
Simwiinde Kalaula
Claims Manager
Mr. Simwiinde Kalaula is a qualified frontline clinician, a public health scientist and an insurance professional having trained at Chainama College/University of Zambia, Leeds Beckett University (UK) and The Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) respectively.
He comes with a combined work experience of over 15 years in both the hospital and insurance industry in Zambia. He heads the Claims Department of the hospital which is tasked with the day-to-day operations of our insurance and corporate clients.
He has been a member of staff since July 2019, approximately a month prior to our very first patient at Medland Hospital.
